I’m a DPhil research student at the University of Sussex, interested in self-organized scale transitions that occur in natural and artificial systems.
How can multi-scale systems evolve / be understood / be built? Is it possible to model and create systems that can self-organize through any scale? What would these systems look like, and can we control them in any meaningful way?
Also, I’m interested in replication, defined best (in my opinion) as catalyzed self-assembly, and the minimal set of requirements a replicating structure must have. A human child isn’t assembled cell-by-cell by the mother, but rather directs its own growth in the supporting environment of the womb. Is self-assembly then a required stepping stone to complex replicators?
